Powerful gales attaining speeds of up to 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in approximately 90,000 homes lacking electricity and led agencies to halt in excess of 100 air travel services, as reported by local media.

The winds are affecting the entire southern region and lower areas of the northern region, as stated by the country's meteorological service.

New Zealand authorities have announced rare severe gust advisories - the most severe warning - in core zones such as Canterbury and Wellington.

Locals have been advised to stay indoors, refrain from journeys, and make arrangements for further electricity and network failures.

Extensive Damage and Crisis Measures

The electricity loss appears to be affecting residences mainly in the South Island, although officials report that power was being gradually reinstated.

Regional news have reported that in certain areas homes have lost their roofs, whereas power lines and trees have been knocked down by the winds.

In Wellington, a man was fatally injured after being impacted by a falling limb at a well-known hiking path on earlier this week.

Also in the capital, a woman was pushed toward oncoming traffic on a street by a strong gust of wind, in a event that was filmed in a popular vehicle recording.

Aircraft services in and out of the metropolis have been halted because of the weather, whereas certain highways and community centers are also closed.

At the same time Canterbury officials have announced a crisis declaration, to assist emergency management operations.

Work Stoppages During Extreme Weather

These intense gusts on Thursday occur while tens of thousands of educators, medical professionals and government employees are participating in what has been termed a "mega strike", calling for better pay and working conditions.

However the extreme weather has pressured them to change various scheduled activities, with some outdoor rallies relocated inside or cancelled.

Similar gusts are also sweeping the neighboring country, causing a heatwave to the remote areas.

Officials have declared fire bans for apprehension regarding wildfires.
